The major theme in this piece is a refuge that is found just on the outskirt of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. This refuge is home to many species of birds, the most extravagant being the Burrowing Owl, which is characterized by the mounds of clay that they build to house their young. A minor theme from the reading is the explanation of the Mormon religion and how important it was to Terry, her family, and it shaped the way they looked at and treated their surroundings. There are many examples of subtext in the essay describing the memories Terry has of growing up around nature with her grandmother. The murmurs that run below the surface are the defiant acts Terry makes against her religion. Out of rage these acts were aimed toward the men that destroyed the refuge where the Burrowing Owl once prospered.
