"Fecundity" by Annie Dillard

Homeplace:

Once Country fields in every direction
an endless backyard
teeming with wildlife
hawks circle above as preys dives into the bush for cover
deer graze in the distance
Great thunderous storms would light up a dark night sky
Slowly fields recede
Black, hot, rough
pavement replaces my playground
the owls presence ceases in the night
Hawks no longer circle above
Deer are forced away by buildings and people
Now the darkness is lit by street lights
my fields are now gone
trapped by a city my soul seeks escape
Finding comfort during day dreams of the past
